Labor hides key Commonwealth Games documents from Victorians

The Allan Labor Government has refused to provide key documents requested by the Legislative Council Select Committee on the Commonwealth Games as it hides information from Victorians.

In an attempt to avoid scrutiny, out of 353 documents requested, the Leader of the Government has claimed executive privilege over all except three documents.

These documents are key to understanding the Labor Government’s decision-making process in promising to host and then cancelling the 2026 Commonwealth Games in regional Victoria, ultimately costing Victorians more than half a billion dollars.

Furthermore, government members of the committee were the only members to vote against adopting the committee’s interim report.

Shadow Minister for Tourism, Sport and Events, Sam Groth, said: “In yet another example of a lack of transparency, the Allan Labor Government is defying a request of State Parliament’s upper house as it attempts to hide its incompetence from Victorians.

“This debacle has set Victorians back by at least $600 million in sunk costs and cancellation fees, and Glasgow is now likely to host the Games courtesy of $200 million from Victoria.

“Labor cannot manage money, cannot manage events and Victorians are paying the price.”
